Baumgartner, Rudolf (14th September 1917-22nd March 2002)

He is a violinist and conductor born in Zurich, Switzerland who studied at the Zurich Conservatory and University and took further studies in Paris and Vienna.

After performing for several years as a soloist and a member of chamber ensembles, he and the violinist, Wolfgang Schneiderhan, founded the Lucerne Festival Strings Orchestra in 1956.

He directed the Lucerne Festival until 1980 and was a director of the Lucerne Conservatory from 1960 to 1987.

He passed away in Siena , Italy , in March 2002 when he was 84 years old.
