He is a singer-songwriter who was born Barry Alan Crompton Gibb in Douglas, Isle of Man, Great Britain. His family moved to Manchester while he was still young and then in 1958 they emigrated to Australia.
Along with his brothers, Robin and Maurice , he started singing and songwriting from a young age and they became the Bee Gees in 1958. He broke Lennon & McCartney’s record by being the only songwriter to have 4 straight No.1s in 1978. His songs have been recorded by well over 2,500 other artists and he has written and produced albums for artists including Andy Gibb (his brother), Barbra Streisand, Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross and Dionne Warwick.
He received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Music from the University of Manchester in 2004 and was awarded a CBE by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace, in 2005. In January 2006 he bought the former home of Johhny and June Cash in Tennessee but it was destroyed in a fire in 2007.
In 2009 he and his brothers (Maurice posthumously) were made Freemen of the Borough of Douglas on the Isle of Man and he and Robin made the decision to perform and record again as the Bee Gees without Maurice, who had died in 2003. In February 2012 he gave his first solo concert in the US where he was joined by his son and Maurice’s daughter Samantha. In May that year his remaining brother Robin died which left him as the last of the Gibb brothers.
He has continued to work as a solo artist, touring in 2013, making guest appearances and releasing the solo album In the Now in 2016.
